Sometimes, your decisions do not have the positive outcome you wished for.

It’s tempting to think that a bad outcome = a bad decision.

This is an inaccurate over-simplification.

It’s true that some decisions are outright mistakes.

Other times, a decision is merely a judgment call.

Being rude and disrespectful to your clients is always a mistake.

However, deciding to challenge your client’s way of thinking only to have them react poorly to it is merely a judgment call that didn’t go your way.

The thing with judgment calls is that there isn’t sufficient information available in advance as to which decision is absolutely correct.

In contrast, with a true mistake, you know upfront that it’s a bad idea but end up doing it anyway for one reason or another.

If you make a judgment call that doesn’t go your way, don’t beat yourself up.

Take comfort in the fact that you did your homework and made a reasonable decision, given the information available at the time.

It’s inevitable that some of those decisions won’t go your way.

Welcome to the burden of leadership.
